21 People Electrocuted, Authority Blames Death on Illegal Connections

Kenya power says it suffered millions losses to illegal connection in its South Nyanza Region

Twenty one cases of fatal and ten non fatal incidences have been reported in the Kenyan South Nyanza region, a situation the authority said was due to illegal power connections.

A report by correspondent Africa shows that the details emerged in an interview with Kenya Power,  South Nyanza regional Manager, Engineer Dan Obiero, who revealed that the stage agency continues incurring loses due to rampant vandalism in the Region.

According to Engineer Obieto,  in the last six months,  Kenya Power has lost an estimated Ksh 6million due to transformer vandalism in South Nyanza .

Engineer Obiero said that since the month of July 2021 to January 2022,  the firm has lost millions of money and power outages.

He was speaking with journalists in Kisii, during a media workshop. Eng. Obiero further stated that the company has lost 20 transformers in the month of July 2021 to January 2022.

“The company made other loses by not providing power to the customers ,”he opined.

According to Eng. Obiero,  vandalism is rampant in South Nyanza Region. Kenya power has set-up  a Multi Agency team  operation to terminate the illegal connections.

He cited that; theft of electricity poles , transformers and copper metal,  has become rampant,  hindering power distribution and supply.

However, Mr Obiero said that,  illegal connectivity is a crime under the law, saying those found would face the harsh arm of law and automatically be arraigned in Court to face charges.

He called on members of the public to report such incidents for action to be taken. He also advised that people should visit the Kenya power offices for legal electricity connectivity.
